Consider any technology and evaluate its effectiveness by using any 3 aspects of Bates’ SECTIONS model.
Technology had a profound effect on the way we read and acquire knowledge. There is a continuous shift towards the inclusion of digital textbooks instead of using printed ones. Let’s examine the effectiveness of these digital textbooks using Bates SECTIONS model.
Ease to use
Instead of carrying a bag full of books, it is easier to carry a device such as tablet, mobile, laptop, etc. that has a collection of digital textbooks. Digital Textbooks are very easy to use as it allows learners to refer to their notes and access course material anytime they want.
Interactive
Some of these digital textbooks have amazing multimedia features such as 3D diagrams, audio, hyperlinks, animations, etc., that can stimulate interest of the learners, hence, motivating them to enjoy the reading process. In addition to this, there is an option for instant search for specific terms and highlighting important content. With this, learners can gain more clarity on different topics that allows better understanding.
Costs
The digital textbooks are very affordable and cost-effective. The minimal production requirement is one of the key reasons behind the low cost of these books. Furthermore, some of these digital textbooks are free to access that are commonly referred to as Open Education Resources.
As a current or future educator, how do you deal with student’s preference for different technologies?
As an educator, I will acknowledge the distinct learning styles of my learners and try to incorporate digital tools that are well-suited for them such as using videos, audios, ed tech apps such as Padlet for collaborative work, etc. Besides this, I will try to understand technology from their perspectives so that I can provide them with guidance and assistance at every step.
I remember students getting loads of books to school, I have experienced this in both my learning and teaching days. Your opinion of going hands-free with a simple gadget that can store all the learning materials is delightful. I believe going digital seems to be perfect, but do you think everyone can afford the cost of digital gadgets. In a way, technology has its drawbacks too. Although digital learning is beneficial, I don’t think it will be appropriate for every student. Do you also think the same about this drawback?
Thanks for sharing your views in this post.
Hi Swanshi,
Thanks for sharing about Digital Textbooks. I agree with you that they are more interactive with integrated hyperlinks and illustrations. However, from my own experience, I still prefer read real books when I can easily note down with a pencil. Moreover, I cannot read for long in digital devices. Also they required particular devices for e-books which are not affordable sometimes.
Sincerely,
Kate
Dear Swanshi,
Thank you very much for sharing your analysis of technology changing education.
I totally agree with your point that the cost of e-books is indeed much lower than that of books, and they are also easy to carry.
At the same time, I think the application of this technology is more eco-friendly, what do you think?
