The dual coding theory believes that the human cognitive system is composed of two sets of codes, Verbal Code and Nonverbal Code. The theory tries to put Verbal and Nonverbal in equal importance. An important principle of the Dual Coding Theory proposed by Paivio is that presenting information in both visual and verbal forms can enhance memory and recognition.

In an ESL reading class, my teacher showed us each paragraph of a reading in the form of pictures. After the teacher asked us to discuss in groups, we put the pictures in each paragraph correctly according to the original text. This method helps students increase their understanding of this reading through pictures and discussions. It is a very effective way to help students who are learning English.
